The Coin Box is a foundational Montessori Infant Toddler material designed to support the development of object permanence.

The child inserts a flat wooden disc into the slot at the top of the box. The disc disappears from view, then can be retrieved by opening the drawer. This simple action demonstrates that an object continues to exist even when it cannot be seen.

The movement itself is precise. The child must align the disc with the slot and release it with control. After retrieval, the process is repeated. The repetition is purposeful and often deeply engaging.

Object permanence is a key cognitive milestone in the first years of life. The Coin Box offers a concrete, repeatable experience that strengthens this understanding while refining coordinated movement.

The drawer adds an additional layer of problem-solving: the child learns that the disc has not vanished — it has moved.

Materials & Safety

Our products are designed to support learning and development and should always be used with appropriate adult supervision.

Our educational materials are made for play and exploration, but still require care and supervision appropriate to a child’s age and stage.

Why this material matters

Refining precise release

The child must align and release the disc accurately into the slot.

Understanding disappearance and return

The disc temporarily leaves sight but remains retrievable, reinforcing the concept that objects continue to exist.

Learning through repetition

The consistent sequence of post–retrieve–repeat strengthens early cognitive and motor development.

A simple 3-step introduction

Prepare on the floor or low table

Place the box in front of the child with one disc beside it.

Demonstrate slow insertion

Align the disc with the slot and release it gently. Open the drawer to retrieve it.

Observe focused repetition

Watch for careful alignment and repeated attempts. Allow the child to repeat without interruption.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my child is ready for this material?

Your child may be ready when they can grasp and release objects intentionally. Interest in dropping objects or placing items into containers is a strong readiness sign.

When do I know if my child is ready to move on from this material?

When insertion becomes smooth and controlled, and the child retrieves the disc independently without hesitation.

What material comes after my child has exceeded the skill?

Ball Drop Boxes and more complex posting variations increase coordination demands and introduce different object shapes.

How long should my child work with this material?

Infants and toddlers often repeat this activity many times in a single session. Repetition is essential and should not be rushed.

What if my child isn’t interested in this material yet?

Return to simpler object permanence experiences such as hiding and revealing objects during play. Interest typically emerges naturally with developmental readiness.
