Lacing Beads are a foundational Infant Toddler material designed to strengthen early coordination of movement.

The child threads large wooden beads onto a cord, guiding the string through each opening with deliberate control. The movement requires both hands to work together — one stabilising the bead, the other guiding the lace.

Unlike decorative craft-based lacing, this activity is purposeful and repetitive. The child refines movement through concentration and repeated attempts. Each successful thread builds accuracy and control.

For toddlers, this type of work supports independence by preparing the hand for later practical life tasks such as buttoning, dressing, and utensil use. It also lays groundwork for later writing preparation through strengthening of small muscle groups in the hand.

The tray presentation keeps the work contained and orderly, supporting the child’s growing sense of structure.

Materials & Safety

Our products are designed to support learning and development and should always be used with appropriate adult supervision.

Many Montessori materials are teaching aids, not toys, and are intended to be introduced and guided by a trained or knowledgeable adult. Children should never be left unattended while using these materials.

Our educational materials are made for play and exploration, but still require care and supervision appropriate to a child’s age and stage.

Why this material matters

Precision through repetition

The child repeats the same controlled motion, gradually improving accuracy and steadiness.

Two hands working together

Threading requires one hand to stabilise while the other guides the lace, strengthening coordinated movement.

Contained, purposeful work

The tray presentation keeps the activity structured, supporting independence and order.

A simple 3-step introduction

Prepare a stable work surface

Place the tray on a low table or floor mat. Ensure the lace is untangled and accessible.

Demonstrate slow threading

Hold the bead steady. Guide the lace through the opening with deliberate movement. Pull gently until secure.

Observe growing control

Watch for improved steadiness and coordination between both hands. Allow repetition without interruption.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my child is ready for this material?

Your child may be ready when they can grasp objects intentionally and show interest in placing items into containers or through openings. Early posting work is often a helpful precursor.

When do I know if my child is ready to move on from this material?

When threading becomes smooth and controlled without frustration, and the child completes the activity independently from start to finish.

What material comes after my child has exceeded the skill?

Dressing Frames introduce more complex hand coordination through fastening. Later, Metal Insets refine pencil control in the 3–6 environment.

How long should my child work with this material?

Toddlers often repeat threading for extended periods. Repetition is valuable and supports muscle memory development.

What if my child isn’t interested in this material yet?

Return to simpler posting or containment activities. As hand control strengthens, threading typically becomes appealing.
