Montessori aligned

Child-safe materials

Built for repetition

Aligned with Montessori principles for the home.

Fine Motor Skills
Develops hand strength, finger control, and precise movements needed for everyday tasks.
Hand–Eye Coordination
Helps children coordinate visual input with hand movements for accurate and controlled actions.
Focus & Concentration
Supports sustained attention and helps children stay engaged with an activity from beginning to end.

The Screw Board isolates one essential movement: controlled wrist rotation.

At 2–3 years, the child is refining hand movements beyond simple grasping and posting. Twisting actions begin appearing naturally in daily life — turning handles, lids, and fasteners. This material gives that movement intentional structure.

Each screw must be aligned carefully and rotated with control. One hand stabilises while the other turns, strengthening bilateral coordination and building precision.

The work has a clear beginning and completion: loosen, remove, replace, tighten. This defined cycle supports concentration and independence.

The simplicity of the design ensures the focus remains on movement — not distraction.

Materials & Safety

Our products are designed to support learning and development and should always be used with appropriate adult supervision.

Many Montessori materials are teaching aids, not toys, and are intended to be introduced and guided by a trained or knowledgeable adult. Children should never be left unattended while using these materials.

Our educational materials are made for play and exploration, but still require care and supervision appropriate to a child’s age and stage.

Why this material matters

Builds Focus & Concentration

The resistance of the screw invites sustained attention and careful effort.

Refines Fine Motor Skills

Repeated twisting strengthens the small muscles of the hand required for later writing and practical life tasks.

Supports Independence

The child experiences success through controlled, repeatable action.

A simple 3-step introduction

Prepare the Material

Place the board on a stable table. Ensure screws are partially tightened but not difficult to turn.

Demonstrate Slowly

Stabilise with one hand. Rotate with the other. Show deliberate, controlled movement.

Allow Repetition

The child may remove and replace the same screw many times. Repetition strengthens coordination.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my child is ready for this material?

Your child may be ready if they have mastered simple posting work and are beginning to experiment with twisting motions in daily life — such as turning lids, knobs, or handles. Readiness is less about age and more about emerging wrist rotation and the ability to stabilise an object with one hand while the other moves.

When do I know if my child is ready to move on from this material?

You will notice smoother, controlled rotation with minimal slipping or overcorrection. When your child can align, remove, and replace the screws independently and confidently — without visible strain — the movement has been refined.

What material comes after my child has exceeded the skill?

More complex rotational work such as bolt boards with varying resistance, Nuts on a Base with differing sizes, and early Practical Life fastening activities extend the same coordination into functional, real-world application.

How long should my child work with this material?

As long as interest remains. Repetition strengthens hand muscles and coordination. Many children return to screw work periodically as strength and control continue to develop.

What if my child isn’t interested in this material yet?

Return to simpler alignment or posting materials. Sometimes rotational control is still developing. Reintroduce the Screw Board later — readiness often appears naturally as fine motor strength increases.
